Our DMLS 3D Printing Services

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is an additive manufacturing technology based on metal powder. It works by using a focused laser beam to selectively melt metal powder layer by layer, based on slice data from a 3D model. The molten metal solidifies upon cooling, forming a dense, layered structure. By repeatedly melting and stacking layers, DMLS can build complex 3D parts with high precision. This technology excels at producing parts with superior mechanical properties, making it widely used in the manufacture of precision parts across various industries.

How does DMLS 3D Printing Work
DMLS 3D Printing

Before printing, engineers slice the 3D model and set key parameters such as laser power and scanning speed to ensure print quality and accuracy. Once the machine is started, a high-power laser selectively scans the metal powder bed along a programmed path, melting specific areas of the powder. The molten metal then cools and solidifies naturally, forming solid layers.

After each layer melts, the powder bed is lowered to a preset height equal to the layer thickness, and a recoating roller spreads a new layer of powder. This cycle of melting, solidifying, stacking, and recoating is repeated layer by layer until the part is fully formed. After printing, the part undergoes a slow cooling process in the build chamber. Once removed, the part typically requires necessary post-processing steps.

Superior Mechanical Properties

Superior Mechanical Properties

DMLS 3D printed parts achieve densities exceeding 99.9%, with tensile strength, fatigue life, and structural stability meeting industry-leading standards. Their performance approaches that of traditionally forged parts.

Rapid Production Cycles

Rapid Production Cycles

DMLS 3D printing allows for direct part manufacturing without mold design, significantly reducing development time. Multiple different parts can be produced on the same machine, making it ideal for small-batch and customized production.

Support for Complex Structures

Support for Complex Structures

DMLS technology, independent of toolpaths or mold constraints, allows for the direct fabrication of complex structures impossible with traditional machining, such as intricate internal channels and lattice honeycomb structures. It is ideal for innovative part development.

High Precision Capabilities

High Precision Capabilities

DMLS technology utilizes precise laser melting, with layer thicknesses between 20 and 100 micrometers, enabling extremely high dimensional accuracy and fine detail reproduction. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring high-precision part production.

DMLS Material Options

DMLS 3D Printing Materials
Stainless Steel (17-4PH)
Stainless Steel (316L)
Aluminum (AlSi10Mg)
Inconel 718
Titanium (Ti6Al4V)
Stainless Steel (17-4PH)

17-4PH is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel known for its hardness and corrosion resistance. If a stainless steel option is required, choose 17-4PH as it has significantly higher tensile and yield strengths, but be aware that its elongation at break is much lower than 316L. 17-4PH parts are ultimately manufactured using vacuum solution heat treatment and H900 aging.

Stainless Steel (17-4PH)
Stainless Steel (316L)

When stainless steel flexibility is required, choose 316L; it is a more ductile material compared to 17-4PH. Final parts made with 316L can be stress-relieved.

Stainless Steel (316L)
Aluminum (AlSi10Mg)

Aluminum (AlSi10Mg) is comparable to the 3000 series alloys used in casting and die-casting processes. It has a good strength-to-weight ratio, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, as well as good fatigue, creep, and fracture strength. AlSi10Mg also has thermal and electrical conductivity. Final parts made with AlSi10Mg can be stress-relieved.

Aluminum (AlSi10Mg)
Inconel 718

Inconel is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium alloy ideal for parts subjected to extreme temperatures and mechanical loads. Finished parts made with Inconel 718 are stress-relieved. Solution treatment and aging according to AMS 5663 can also be performed to improve tensile strength and hardness.

Inconel 718
Titanium (Ti6Al4V)

Titanium (Ti6Al4V) is a leading alloy for direct metal laser sintering. When compared to annealed Grade 23 titanium, Ti6Al4V’s mechanical properties are comparable to forged titanium in tensile strength, elongation, and hardness.
